You can see the influence of Norman McLaren’s painted films in the effervescent cameraless animations of Uruguayan filmmaker Eduardo Darino, who worked as both a commercial and experimental animator. McLaren wrote to Darino: “I’m impressed by your artwork, clean lines that move with precision and grace against the music, even more when I learned that it was made in 16mm!!” Darino’s Cocktail de Rayas, or Striped Cocktail, from 1964, was painted, stamped, scratched directly on 16mm film, set to music by Charles Williams.
